# AI Inference Cost: Output Token Pricing for Flagship LLMs

Flagship intelligence is decoupling from flagship pricing. Open and low-cost models deliver frontier reasoning at a fraction of the token cost.

## Chart: Qwen3.8-Max rates within 30 Arena points of Claude Opus 5.5 for 3.3× less per output token. DeepSeek V4 Pro is 10.1× cheaper.

List price in US$ per 1M output tokens (log scale) vs Chatbot Arena Elo rating for models rating ≥ 1,430, Oct 2026.

| Model | Price per 1M output tokens (USD, log scale) | Arena Elo Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $50 | 1511 | Arena entry claude-fable-5.1-max · $10 in / $50 out per 1M |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $20 | 1512 | Arena entry claude-opus-5.5-high · $4 in / $20 out per 1M |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $10 | 1467 | Arena entry claude-sonnet-5.5-xhigh · $2 in / $10 out per 1M |
| Gemini 3.1 Pro | $12 | 1480 | Arena entry gemini-3.1-pro-preview · $2 in / $12 out per 1M |
| GPT-6 Astra | $50 | 1442 | Arena entry gpt-6-astra-max · $10 in / $50 out per 1M |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $10 | 1446 | Arena entry gpt-6.1-sol-max · $2 in / $10 out per 1M |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro | $1.98 | 1451 | Arena entry deepseek-v4-pro · $0.66 in / $1.98 out per 1M |
| Qwen3.8-Max | $6 | 1482 | Arena entry qwen3.8-max · $2 in / $6 out per 1M |

Note: Arena rating is for the reasoning setting named in the data table. DeepSeek is the off-peak list price (peak is double). Gemini 4 Argon had no list price; Mistral Large 4 is not yet on Arena. Prices reflect standard off-peak API rates for general availability endpoints.

## The signal

- **Arena:** On the Chatbot Arena leaderboard, Claude Opus 5.5 scores 1512 while Qwen3.8-Max achieves 1482, a gap of only 30 points.
- **Pricing:** Alibaba lists Qwen3.8-Max at $6 per million output tokens, compared to $20 for Claude Opus 5.5 and $1.98 for DeepSeek V4 Pro.

## The Mode read

Frontier model performance is converging much faster than pricing. On the Chatbot Arena text leaderboard, Claude Opus 5.5 leads at **1512**, but Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max scores **1482**—a narrow 30-point spread. Yet their API economics tell an entirely different story.

Anthropic charges **$20** per million output tokens for Opus 5.5. Alibaba charges **$6** for Qwen3.8-Max, making it **3.3×** less expensive. DeepSeek V4 Pro scores 1451 at **$1.98** per million output tokens, an extraordinary **10.1×** discount against the top-ranked model.

When top-tier intelligence becomes a low-cost commodity, the winning startups will not be those building proprietary base models. The durable margin belongs to software layers that orchestrate multi-model routing, domain-specific retrieval, and workflow automation. If model pricing falls 10× every eighteen months, distribution and user lock-in remain the only defensible assets.

> Model intelligence is commoditizing into a utility. Value accrues entirely to distribution.

**What we would back:** Applied AI vertical platforms that leverage low-cost frontier models to replace manual business workflows.
