ChatGPT vs. Gemini vs. Meta AI: User Numbers Compared

All three now claim close to a billion users. Gemini and Meta AI got there by riding products people already use.

The signal

ChatGPT reports 900M weekly users (Feb 2026). Gemini reports 950M monthly (Jul 2026), 2.4× its May 2025 figure. Meta AI reports 1B monthly (May 2025).

Users each company has stated publicly, millions. ChatGPT counts weekly active users; Gemini and Meta AI count monthly active users. Points are the dates of each statement.

Later "1 billion" claims for ChatGPT and Gemini reached us only through secondary sites and are left out. Grok's 117M MAU is held until the filing is read. Weekly and monthly counts are not comparable: a monthly count is always at least as large as a weekly one for the same product. Meta AI is counted across Meta's apps. These are company statements, not independent measurements.

The Mode read

Every AI company now leads with a user number. The question is what those numbers measure, and how each company got there.

ChatGPT reports 900M weekly users, up from 800M in Oct 2025. Gemini reports 950M monthly users, 2.4× its May 2025 figure. Meta AI reports 1B monthly users, counted across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. The numbers look alike, but they count different things: weekly is a stricter bar than monthly.

The routes matter more than the totals. ChatGPT built a new habit that people go to on purpose. Gemini and Meta AI were placed inside products people already open every day. Both routes reach a billion, but only the first one had to win each user. For a startup, the second route is the one to copy: find the surface your customers already open daily, and put the product there.

A billion users came two ways: a new habit, or a button in an app people already open.

What we would back: Companies that put AI inside a surface their customers already open every day.
