AI Inference Cost: Output Token Pricing for Flagship LLMs

Flagship intelligence is decoupling from flagship pricing. Open and low-cost models deliver frontier reasoning at a fraction of the token cost.

The Mode read

Frontier model performance is converging much faster than pricing. On the Chatbot Arena text leaderboard, Claude Opus 5.5 leads at 1512, but Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max scores 1482—a narrow 30-point spread. Yet their API economics tell an entirely different story.

Anthropic charges $20 per million output tokens for Opus 5.5. Alibaba charges $6 for Qwen3.8-Max, making it 3.3× less expensive. DeepSeek V4 Pro scores 1451 at $1.98 per million output tokens, an extraordinary 10.1× discount against the top-ranked model.

When top-tier intelligence becomes a low-cost commodity, the winning startups will not be those building proprietary base models. The durable margin belongs to software layers that orchestrate multi-model routing, domain-specific retrieval, and workflow automation. If model pricing falls 10× every eighteen months, distribution and user lock-in remain the only defensible assets.

Model intelligence is commoditizing into a utility. Value accrues entirely to distribution.
