The Mode read

The notion of a single "best AI model" has ended. On the Chatbot Arena leaderboard, capability has split into distinct specializations: Google's Gemini models dominate quantitative and reasoning domains, holding #1 in 6 of 8 categories, while Anthropic's Claude leads in 2.

Google ranks first in Overall, Coding, Math, Hard Prompts, Instruction Following, and Longer Query. Anthropic counters with first-place rankings in Expert Prompts and Creative Writing. OpenAI, previously the uncontested leader, does not place a single model in the top 15 of any category; its best showing is #16.

This specialization destroys the premise of an all-in-one foundation model monopoly. Enterprise software teams do not need a single generalist model; they need task-specific routers that dispatch coding queries to Gemini and nuanced advisory workflows to Claude. For venture founders, the opportunity is not training models, but building the routing intelligence that extracts optimal price-performance from each category specialist.

No single lab wins every category. The winning moat is dynamic multi-model routing.

What we would back: Enterprise middleware that dynamically routes domain tasks to the highest-ranking category specialist.
